As recorded by the Valley Jazz Orchestra on the album Vicious Fishes
approx. 8 min. An adaptation of a piece originally recorded on the album Justin Morell Dectet. The piece is built around an ostinato played by the piano. Virtually every note has a corresponding note to form a perfect fifth. Therefore, intonation is a challenge as the fifths should remain as pure and open as possible. The groove is a light swing feel with a backbeat implied, but not always present. As the theme slowly develops throughout the first half of the piece, the drums act as timekeeper and soloist, subtly commenting on and around the melody and background figures. The extended solo section at the end can be assigned to a single soloist or to both saxophones in dialog or trading.
Instrumentation: [5, 4, 4, 4] soprano/alto, alto 2 (doubles flute), 2 tenor, baritone (doubles bass clarinet) saxophones; trumpets 3 & 4 double flugelhorn.
