Approx. 11 minutes. Dog Years is composed for traditional 5/4/4/4 big band. The video recording above features some additional layered synth sounds and effects, but every note in the recording is accounted for in the big band score. Solos are in the soprano saxophone and second trumpet parts. The melody is introduced by bass clarinet and bass, and later played by baritone saxophone and bass trombone—it’s a rare opportunity for the low instruments to be featured on the main melody.

The recapitulation presents the main thematic ideas in a double fugue. The dynamic marking “m” is used throughout to indicate “mezzo”, or medium volume, in place of the more typical “mf” and “mp”.

Instrumentation: [5, 4, 4, 4] soprano, alto (doubles flute), 2 tenor (doubling B-flat clarinet), baritone (doubles bass clarinet) saxophones; trumpets double flugelhorn. Additional optional parts are included for both tenor saxophones and baritone saxophone that eliminate the clarinet doubles. Also included: a vibraphone part and a vocal part, both optional.

Score is available for free here, and is featured in the video above. Purchase includes the complete set of parts.
